Follow As A Metric

One of my favorite things about working for Circa is seeing the follower counts for stories.  Page views and uniques are a good way to measure how interesting a headline is. Time on article is a good way to measure how interesting the piece was.

But Circa gives users the option to follow a story for further updates. Being able to see what stories people are following is very powerful. It says, “That’s cool. Tell me more.” It changes your mindset from looking for quick gratification to looking for stories with “legs.”

nb. The most followed stories on Circa? Space, tech and national events.

‘Chunking’ online content? Don’t assume we start at the same point

Online multimedia production has for a few years now come with the guidance to ‘chunk’ content: instead of producing linear content, as you would for a space in a linear broadcast schedule, you split your content into specific chunks of material that each tackles a different aspect of the issue or story being covered.

'It is time to take storytelling seriously' | Journalism.co.uk

I am absolutely fascinated by the mechanics of storytelling. I admitted as much at news:rewired last year when I was invited to talk about new forms of storytelling in journalism. But in exploring some of these brilliant new platforms – Twitter, Storyful, Storify, even online video – we forget that storytelling itself is not a new thing. It is, of course, ancient.
